More and more dental practices are beginning to see the benefits of engaging a professional designer to create a unique dental logo or ideogram for them. Gone are the days where all dental logos looked alike and were only differentiated by font type and font color. Today, dental logos come in various forms - abstract mark, pictorial mark and logotype - to help give variety to dental logo designs. Abstract Mark An abstract mark is an utterly unique design which can be used in a logo design to represent certain aspects of an organization. For example, if a dental practice has 4 partners, a unique mark repeated 3 times might be used to represent this. When creating abstract marks for dental ideograms, one must remember to shy away from sharp or pointy designs. Also, avoid designs that look like drills or scalpels, for obvious reason. Needless to say, avoiding the color red is recommended. Instead, use green, blue and white to represent freshness, serenity and cleanliness respectively. Pictorial Mark A pictorial mark resembles the object it depicts. A good example of this is the Starbucks logo whereby the pictorial mark of this logo creation depicts a siren. Many dental logos utilize pictorial marks in their design. Most common dental related pictorial marks are those which depict healthy teeth and gums, smiles or an illustration of a mouth mirror. You will never find pictorial marks depicting dentist drills and other objects that can be easily associated with pain.

Logotype Logotype is the most commonly used design style when it comes to dental ideogram designs. In fact it is quite common in many industries. Take for instance logos from IBM, Intel and Dell. The good thing about logotype usage is that a viewer can immediately identify the companies those logos represent. Since this method is quite restrictive design wise, designers have to be extra creative in getting additional messages across via this logo style. However, many logo designs contain both logotype as well as and abstract mark or a pictorial mark. Again, a good example would be the previous Starbucks logo with contained the words Starbucks Coffee and the siren pictorial mark. Summary When designing a dental logo, it is important that you try to relay the right feel. The potential patient needs to feel comfortable and confident in the hands of the dental practitioner. With the help of 'dentist safe' colors and the use of various styles mentioned above, a good dental corporate identity design can achieve that end.
